The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has initiated excavations at Balirajgarh, located in the Babubarhi block of Madhubani district, Bihar, which is believed to be the gateway to ancient Mithila. This site holds significant mythological and historical importance, identified in local folklore as the capital of the legendary King Bali. Scholars suggest that Balirajgarh was a major administrative center of the ancient Videha Kingdom, part of the 16 Mahajanapadas. Previous surveys indicated a massive brick fortification and a continuous habitation timeline spanning several key dynasties, including the Mauryan, Sunga, Kushan, and Pala periods. ASI's current excavation aims to reach the original soil to determine when human settlement first began, with preliminary data suggesting connections to the Iron Age Videha Kingdom. The ASI plans to dig approximately 20 trenches to explore cultural continuity across five historical phases. Past excavations have uncovered a variety of artefacts, indicating advanced urban planning in ancient times. The findings from this site are expected to solidify Madhubani's status as a significant center of Indian philosophy and cultural heritage.
