Chandra Bose, the grandnephew of prominent Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose, has joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, moving away from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) just days before the West Bengal assembly elections. At a press event, he was accompanied by TMC state minister Bratya Basu and MP Kirti Azad. Bose criticized the BJP for what he termed 'divisive politics' and stated that it is incompatible with the ideals of his granduncle. He had previously joined the BJP in 2016 but faced electoral defeats in both the 2016 assembly elections from Bhabanipur and the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Kolkata Dakshin. Over time, his disagreements with BJP leadership grew, leading to his resignation in September 2023. Bose has since praised TMC leader Mamata Banerjee for her stance on various issues, calling his previous alliance with the BJP a 'historic blunder.' The upcoming assembly elections will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with votes counted on May 4.
