Air New Zealand is set to enhance the travel experience for economy passengers by introducing Economy Skynest sleeping pods on its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flights, with bookings opening on May 18 for select flights starting in November. Each pod, designed like a bunk bed, will feature a mattress, bedding, a privacy curtain, a seat belt, reading light, charging ports, and an amenity kit. The airline’s Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar emphasized that these pods will allow travelers to 'stretch out, lie flat, and get a few hours’ proper rest in the air,' making long journeys to and from New Zealand more manageable. The initial deployment will serve the 17-hour flight from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Auckland, New Zealand, one of the longest flights globally. Passengers can book a pod for $495 per four-hour session, aligning with research on sleep cycles that suggests a typical cycle lasts around 90 minutes.
