The hospitality industry in India is facing a critical situation following a significant price hike in commercial LPG cylinders, which have now reached ₹3,071.50 for a 19-kg cylinder, marking an increase of ₹993. This rise comes on the heels of previous hikes of ₹195.50 in April and ₹144 in March, totaling ₹1,332.50 in just three adjustments. Pradeep Shetty, spokesperson for the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India and Vice President of the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India, highlighted that this surge in costs will likely lead to a 10-15% increase in menu prices, but warned that this may not be sufficient to mitigate the financial impact on businesses. Many establishments are already operating with reduced hours and limited menus due to inconsistent supply and rising fuel costs. Shetty emphasized that without immediate government action to stabilize LPG prices, the hospitality sector, a vital source of employment, faces an existential crisis, with potential for accelerated closures and job losses.
