The Congress party, Left front, and CPI-ML (Liberation) have firmly rejected an alliance proposal from Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), aimed at opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim stated that they will not collaborate with individuals perceived as criminals, corrupt, or communal. This response follows Banerjee's call for unity among opposition parties after the BJP secured 207 out of 294 seats in the recent West Bengal assembly elections, leaving the TMC with only 80 seats. Banerjee had invited various political factions, including the Left and what she termed 'ultra-Left', to join forces against the BJP, emphasizing that their primary adversary is the BJP. However, Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy questioned the inclusion of 'ultra-Left' groups, referencing past violence against Congress members. In contrast, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari dismissed Banerjee's political significance, while Left leaders expressed skepticism about any partnership with her, citing concerns over democracy during her tenure.
