The National Council (Staff Side), Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), has formally requested the Indian government to promptly announce the dearness allowance (DA) hike effective January 1, 2026. This request comes amid growing pressure from employee bodies, particularly as the delay has raised concerns among central government employees and pensioners. The DA hike is anticipated to increase from 58% to 60%, benefiting over one crore individuals. Historically, the government announces the DA hike for the January-July cycle around Holi or by the end of March. However, this year's announcement is delayed due to the transition from the 7th Pay Commission, which ended on December 31, 2025, to the newly constituted 8th Pay Commission. The 8th Pay Commission is expected to submit its recommendations within 18 months from its establishment in November 2025. The Confederation of Central Government Employees & Workers has also called for an All-India demonstration on April 16 to emphasize the urgency of the situation.
