His representatives confirmed that the filmmakers have neither his life rights nor the rights to his music, stating, "Since 2021, the parties involved have been officially notified that they do not possess Billy Joel's life rights and will not be able to secure the music rights required for this project." The film, directed by John Ottman, is based on the perspective of Joel's first manager, Irwin Mazur, who discovered him in 1966. Despite Joel's disapproval, casting is underway, with production expected to begin this fall in Winnipeg, Canada, and New York. The narrative may also touch on Joel's complex personal life, including his relationship with his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, which reportedly contributed to tensions in his early band, Attila. Jon Small, Joel's former drummer, is involved in the project as a consultant and co-executive producer.
