Lee emphasized that critics are misjudging the film's timeline, as the accusations arose later. He expressed his nostalgia for Jackson, who passed away in 2009, noting, “I miss Mike. I miss Prince.” Fuqua also clarified that the intention was to depict Jackson's artistry and humanity before delving into the more controversial aspects of his life in a planned sequel. Jackson faced multiple allegations during his lifetime, including charges of child molestation in 2003, which he denied and was acquitted of in 2005.
