A recent study published in the journal Science by researchers from Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center indicates that artificial intelligence (AI) can outperform human doctors in emergency room diagnoses. The study found that an AI language model diagnosed patients accurately 67% of the time, compared to 50-55% accuracy for human doctors. When provided with more detailed patient information, the AI's accuracy improved to 82%. The research involved 76 patients in the emergency room, where two attending physicians diagnosed the patients alongside AI models developed by OpenAI. While the findings suggest that AI could enhance clinical decision-making, researchers also highlighted limitations, including the AI's inability to interpret non-verbal cues or assess patient distress.
