The C Joseph Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government, known as the Tamilaga Valvu Kuzhu (TVK), is set to face a crucial floor test in the Assembly today, as mandated by Governor RV Arlekar to be conducted on or before May 13. The TVK holds a total strength of 107 members, which includes the Speaker who will not participate in the vote. However, the party's Tirupattur MLA, R Seenivasa Sethupathy, will be unable to vote due to a High Court ruling stemming from a close electoral contest against a DMK candidate. The ruling TVK has secured support from five Congress MLAs and has also received backing from the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)), VCK, and IUML, each contributing two MLAs. Additionally, a faction of approximately 30 AIADMK MLAs led by senior leaders SP Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam has pledged support to the government, despite opposition from those loyal to party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, who have indicated they will vote against the government. This situation could lead to potential anti-defection repercussions for dissenting party members.
