In Prayagraj, the alarming decline in groundwater levels, primarily due to over-extraction from tube wells and borewells, has led the state government to promote rainwater harvesting as a solution. The UP Groundwater department is targeting the installation of rainwater harvesting systems over an area of 20,000 square meters this year, with surveys already underway in government buildings. Aviral Singh, a hydrologist, noted that the previous target for the 2024-25 period of 15,000 square meters has been fully achieved. Notably, rooftop systems at the Government ITI and Ishwar Sharan Degree College are expected to recharge around 3,440 cubic meters of groundwater annually. Furthermore, the Prayagraj Development Authority has made it mandatory for new constructions exceeding 300 square meters to incorporate rainwater harvesting systems. In addition to urban initiatives, the government is also constructing 'Amrit Sarovars' and check dams in rural areas to facilitate rainwater harvesting, aiming to address the critical issue of water scarcity in the region.
