Joe Murphy, an IRA Volunteer who died on hunger strike in Cork during the War of Independence, was honored in a ceremony in his birthplace, Lynn, Massachusetts. Murphy, who died on October 25, 1920, on the 76th day of his hunger strike, was overshadowed by the death of Lord Mayor Terence MacSwiney on the same day. The ceremony featured Cork's current Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy and Lynn's Mayor Jared Nicholson, who planted a commemorative tree opposite Lynn City Hall. Murphy was born to Irish emigrant parents and returned to Cork at a young age, eventually becoming an officer in the IRA. His contributions to Ireland's independence struggle were recognized by the Irish State in 2019 when his family received a posthumous Service Medal. Dennehy expressed pride in honoring Murphy, emphasizing the importance of recognizing his legacy in the place of his birth.
