Effective April 1, minimum wages in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have been revised, impacting millions of workers. In Haryana, new monthly wages are set at ₹15,220.71 for unskilled workers, ₹16,780.74 for semi-skilled, and ₹18,500.81 for skilled workers. The state emphasizes equal pay for men and women in similar roles, reinforcing compliance with equal pay norms. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh has increased its minimum wages by approximately 21% in urban districts like Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad, with new rates of ₹13,690 for unskilled and ₹16,868 for skilled workers. This adjustment addresses the widening wage gap due to inflation in urban areas. For low-income households, even a modest wage increase of ₹2,000–₹3,000 can significantly enhance financial liquidity for essentials such as food, rent, and healthcare. However, enforcement of these minimum wage laws remains inconsistent, particularly in informal sectors, where many workers may not receive the statutory wages. The revisions occur alongside India's new labour codes, which aim to standardize wage definitions and improve compliance, although full implementation is still pending.
