During the ongoing visit of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol to India, the two nations are advancing their maritime cooperation, particularly in shipbuilding and logistics. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (East) P Kumaran announced that the partnership is transitioning from high-level diplomacy to practical, long-term capacity building. A significant milestone includes a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), aimed at modernizing India's shipbuilding infrastructure. This collaboration will focus on upgrading existing shipyards, developing block fabrication facilities, and constructing new dry docks for specialized vessels. The partnership emphasizes the infusion of advanced technology and the development of port infrastructure, alongside financing and skill training initiatives. Kumaran highlighted the importance of the Maritime Development Fund (India) and the Korean Sites Development Partnership Funds in facilitating knowledge sharing and training for Indian workers. This strategic partnership is seen as essential for enhancing India's position in the global maritime industry, especially as both countries seek to secure critical maritime supply chains amid changing global trade dynamics. The ongoing discussions are expected to accelerate investment flows and technology transfer, strengthening the India-South Korea special strategic relationship.
