On May 25, the Assam government introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, which aims to make registration of live-in relationships compulsory within one month. This legislation stipulates that any child born from such a relationship will be recognized as legitimate. However, couples cannot register if either partner is already married, as polygamy is banned under the proposed UCC framework. The Bill also prohibits minors from entering live-in relationships and disallows registration if there are allegations of coercion. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora presented the UCC Bill, which aims to provide a legal framework for live-in relationships and protect the rights of partners, particularly in terms of financial maintenance for deserted partners. While traditional weddings remain prevalent in Assamese culture, this Bill acknowledges the legality of live-in relationships among consenting adults, aligning with protections under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. The introduction of this Bill marks a significant step towards formal recognition of non-traditional partnerships in Assam.
