In March, car sales in Europe experienced a significant boost, with overall registrations rising by 11.1% to 1,581,169 vehicles, as reported by the European automobile lobby ACEA. This growth was primarily fueled by a remarkable 42% increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations, indicating a shift in consumer preference away from petrol and diesel cars amid rising fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly the Iran war. Notably, electrified vehicles, including battery-electric and plug-in hybrids, accounted for nearly 70% of all car registrations. Tesla led the charge with an impressive 84.3% year-on-year sales increase, surpassing Chinese competitor BYD, which also saw a substantial 147.6% rise in registrations. Other legacy automakers, such as Volkswagen, Stellantis, and BMW, reported modest sales increases, further highlighting the growing trend towards electric mobility in Europe.
