The Health Service Executive (HSE) of Ireland has initiated a review into Autism Initiatives Ireland, now rebranded as Autism A Chara, after allegations surfaced regarding the transfer of €1.5 million to its UK counterpart. Concerns were first raised in 2019 about the movement of €1,522,778 from the charity's reserves to entities outside Ireland over four years. HSE chief executive Anne O’Connor informed the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee that the review will scrutinize financial, contractual, and governance records related to the charity. She emphasized that the HSE was neither notified nor approved any transfers of HSE-funded resources to external entities. O’Connor also noted that while annual external audits are conducted, they do not verify compliance with service arrangement conditions. The charity reported a surplus of €0.245 million for the year ending March 2025, with its primary funding source being statutory bodies. The HSE maintains that it funds Autism A Chara solely for disability services within Ireland and has found no evidence of services being contracted to UK-based entities.
