The State Bank of India's latest research report, titled โHow India Works Today: Insights into Wages, Skills, and Informal Employment through the Lens of PLFS 2025โ, reveals notable regional disparities in India's labor market. Over a 37-year period, the share of agriculture in the workforce has declined by 23%, while large enterprises now employ 13.7% of the workforce, up from 10.8% in 2024, driven by government initiatives to boost manufacturing. The report indicates that states like Gujarat (0.9% unemployment), Madhya Pradesh (1.5%), Karnataka (2.3%), and Chhattisgarh (2.3%) exhibit relatively low unemployment rates, suggesting stronger employment generation. Conversely, states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Punjab show lower labor force participation and higher informal employment, with Punjab at 82% of workers classified as informal. The report also highlights that 42% of informal employment is in agriculture, and stresses the need for stricter implementation of the Minimum Wages Act, particularly in states like Chhattisgarh (~70%) and Odisha (~66%) where many workers earn below the statutory minimum wage.
