Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 10.65 km Mararikulam-Alappuzha section on the Southern Railway network, with a sanctioned budget of ₹220.51 crore. This project is part of a broader initiative to enhance railway capacity, as it addresses the last remaining single-line stretch on the Ernakulam-Turavur-Alappuzha corridor. Once completed, the doubling will facilitate the operation of 9 additional passenger trains in each direction daily and support freight traffic of 2.88 million tonnes per annum. The project is projected to generate an additional net earning of approximately ₹3.08 crore annually through increased passenger and freight movement. It aims to improve operational efficiency by reducing train delays, enhancing punctuality, and strengthening connectivity across the region. The initiative is aligned with Indian Railways' Mission 3000 MT and demonstrates strong economic viability, with a Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR) of 3.99% and an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 22.30%. This approval underscores Indian Railways' commitment to modernizing infrastructure and supporting socio-economic development in Kerala.
