On Monday, the Supreme Court of India sought responses from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Centre regarding the recent NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, expressing disappointment that previous lessons from similar incidents have not been heeded. A bench of justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe highlighted the need for accountability, as the current examination process has been criticized for its integrity. The petitions filed by the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) and United Doctors Front (UDF) advocate for replacing the NTA with a statutory body that can ensure the examination's integrity. The court noted that a monitoring committee was established following a similar controversy in 2024, which led to recommendations for significant reforms. Despite these recommendations, including the establishment of a High Powered Steering Committee and the enactment of the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, the current situation indicates insufficient implementation of these measures. The court has directed the NTA to provide an affidavit on the monitoring committee's status and has scheduled a follow-up hearing for May 29. The NEET-UG 2026 examination, originally conducted on May 3, has been rescheduled for June 21.
