On Tuesday, the Bombay High Court in Mumbai granted permission for Dr. Sangram Patil, a British citizen of Indian origin, to return to the United Kingdom after being detained for over three months. The court ordered the state government to modify the Look Out Circular (LOC) that had prevented him from leaving the country. Dr. Patil, a consultant doctor with the UK's public health service, had been stopped at Mumbai airport on January 10 and detained following a complaint regarding his critical social media posts about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Justice Ashwin Bhobhe noted that holding Patil for such a long time was excessive and could jeopardize his employment. The court accepted undertakings from Patil and his parents that he would cooperate with the investigation and return to India when required, provided he receives prior notice. The case stems from a complaint filed by Nikhil Bhamre, a social media coordinator for the Bharatiya Janata Party's Maharashtra unit, alleging defamatory remarks against party leaders.
