In a recent scam, over 100 residents in Mumbai, Maharashtra, were deceived by fraudsters impersonating Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) representatives. Victims received alarming messages stating that their gas connections would be cut off unless they paid their pending bills immediately. This led many to download an unknown APK file, granting cybercriminals remote access to their mobile devices. As a result, the scammers stole banking information and siphoned off approximately ₹2.7 crore (roughly $325,000 USD) from victims' accounts in the last month. The MGL, which provides gas services in Maharashtra and Karnataka, had recently announced promotions for new domestic piped natural gas (PNG) registrations, further complicating the situation. The scam has emerged amid rising concerns over energy supply disruptions linked to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has significantly affected oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
