AIIMS New Delhi has launched India's first portable bedside MRI system, a significant advancement in critical care and neurodiagnostics. This ultra-low-field MRI device can be wheeled directly to a patient's bedside, allowing for rapid brain imaging in intensive care units (ICUs), emergency settings, and neurosurgical care. Unlike traditional MRI machines, which require patient transport and specialized rooms, this portable system minimizes risks associated with moving unstable patients. It is already in use at the Center for Neurological Conditions under Dr. Shailesh Gaikwad, assisting in diagnosing conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Gaikwad noted that while the portable MRI has lower resolution compared to conventional systems, it is crucial for making timely bedside decisions. The technology is set to enhance access to neurodiagnostics and improve patient outcomes by eliminating delays in imaging that can occur with conventional methods. The introduction of this system is supported by Radiosurgery Global Ltd following regulatory approval in India.
