Kaja Kallas, the European Union's top diplomat and vice-president of the European Commission, arrived in Islamabad on Monday for the 8th EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue, co-chaired with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. This dialogue serves as the highest-level platform for structured discussions between the two parties, reflecting a commitment to strengthen their multifaceted partnership. Kallas is scheduled to meet with senior Pakistani officials, including President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The EU is Pakistan's second-largest trading partner, with the GSP+ status, which allows duty-free access to EU markets for a significant portion of Pakistani exports. This status was extended until 2027 by the European Parliament, emphasizing the need for Pakistan to implement international conventions on human rights and governance. Despite the GSP+ status, concerns remain regarding Pakistan's adherence to these obligations, particularly regarding blasphemy laws and minority rights.
