To address the issue of fuel smuggling from Uttar Pradesh, India, to Nepal, authorities have established a three-layer monitoring system. The initiative aims to combat illegal petrol diversion, which is driven by the significant price disparity between the two countries. The first layer of checks occurs at petrol pumps, where automated systems flag vehicles with unusual refueling patterns, particularly those returning shortly after refills. The second layer involves district administrations in border areas conducting surprise inspections and monitoring bulk purchases. The third layer, crucial for border security, is managed by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which closely monitors vehicular movement and conducts checks to prevent illegal fuel transport. Sanjay Bhandari, executive director of Indian Oil Corporation, highlighted the use of digital transaction data and analytics to identify suspicious behavior at fuel stations. Enhanced coordination among oil companies, district authorities, and border forces has been established to create a strong deterrent against smuggling. Authorities have warned of strict penalties for those involved in illegal fuel trade, including the suspension of fuel station licenses.
