A day-old pre-term newborn at Fortis Escorts Hospital in New Delhi underwent a complex open-heart surgery to correct a rare heart defect known as infradiaphragmatic total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). This condition, which affects approximately 1 in 10,000 live births, prevents oxygen-rich blood from returning to the heart, leading to severe respiratory distress shortly after birth. The infant, born to a 33-year-old first-time mother, was diagnosed during a routine antenatal ultrasound and confirmed through a fetal echocardiogram. The surgery, performed on April 14, was critical, lasting nearly four hours, and successfully rerouted blood flow to the left side of the heart. Following the procedure, the baby showed steady recovery and was discharged after 11 days in stable condition. Doctors emphasized the importance of timely intervention in such cases to ensure a healthy life for affected infants.
