Samsung has announced a groundbreaking feature for its Galaxy Watch 6 that can predict fainting episodes due to vasovagal syncope (VVS) with 84.6% accuracy. This type of fainting, while generally not dangerous, can lead to serious injuries from falls. The prediction capability was developed in partnership with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in South Korea and is based on data collected from the watch's photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, which measures heart rate and rhythm. The research involved 132 patients undergoing tests to simulate fainting episodes, and the AI algorithm used was able to provide warnings up to five minutes in advance. This innovation represents a shift towards preventive healthcare, as noted by Samsung's head of Health R&D Group, Jongmin Choi. While the company has not specified when this feature will be available to users, it expresses intentions to accelerate the rollout of personalized health solutions. The Galaxy Watch 8 currently includes various health monitoring features such as sleep apnea detection and heart irregularity alerts.
