The Congress party, led by Mallikarjun Kharge, has voiced its support for the Women's Reservation Bill while opposing the government's approach to delimitation, which they claim is politically motivated. At a press conference following a meeting of various Opposition leaders in New Delhi, Kharge stated that the Opposition will fight against the government's tactics in Parliament. He emphasized that although they support the bill aimed at increasing women's representation, they object to the delimitation process, which they believe is manipulated to benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Congress's Jairam Ramesh echoed these sentiments, asserting that the Delimitation Commission has become a tool for the ruling party to secure a majority. The government plans to introduce three bills during the extended budget session starting April 16, including one for women's reservation and another for delimitation. However, the ruling alliance currently lacks the necessary seats in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to pass these bills without Opposition cooperation, making their passage unlikely. The Opposition, including leaders from DMK, RJD, and others, is concerned that the proposed delimitation will disproportionately affect southern states, reducing their parliamentary representation.
