Farmers like Suresh Pal from Bhangaiyachat village in Nighasan tehsil, Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh, are disheartened as their mango orchards, which initially showed promise, are suffering from a poor harvest this season. Agro-scientist Dr. Pradeep Kumar Bisen from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra has noted that unusual climate changes, including a sudden rise in temperatures during the flowering stage, have caused heat stress that disrupted pollination. This has been compounded by unseasonal humidity from untimely rains and hail, which have created favorable conditions for pests such as mango hoppers and diseases like powdery mildew. These factors have led to a significant decline in yields across the mango belts of North India. While indigenous mango varieties are faring better, popular varieties like Dussehri and Langda are expected to be in limited supply, potentially driving prices higher for consumers this summer.
