The Indian government, through Debashree Mukherjee, secretary of the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, announced plans to allow large industries to engage up to 25% of their workforce as apprentices, subject to certain conditions. These include having previously reached a 15% apprentice limit, paying at least 30% above the mandated minimum wage, and employing a minimum of 35% of the apprentices. This initiative aims to prevent the exploitation of apprentices as cheap labor. The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) currently supports around three million apprentices. Mukherjee also highlighted the ₹60,000 crore Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme, which aims to modernize 1,000 government industrial training institutes (ITIs) and enhance vocational training. She urged industries to collaborate with the government to design relevant training courses and improve the overall employability of youth, aligning with the vision for a developed India by 2047.
