The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for parts of Delhi, predicting maximum temperatures between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius. This year, India is expected to experience a higher-than-normal number of heatwave days, especially in the Indo-Gangetic plains and western regions. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of IMD, noted that regions like Vidarbha in Maharashtra may see temperatures reaching 41 to 42 degrees Celsius, while states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana could experience temperatures between 40 and 44 degrees Celsius in May. To mitigate the impact, the IMD is disseminating alerts through WhatsApp groups targeting outdoor workers and has installed display boards in public areas to communicate safety measures. Meanwhile, rainfall and thunderstorms are forecasted across various states, with heavy rain expected in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Thunder squalls with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph are likely in Bihar, while hailstorms may occur in parts of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The IMD anticipates a gradual temperature rise of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius in northwest India over the coming days.
