Ajmira Begum Laskar, a 27-year-old woman from Cachar district in Assam, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast track court for the murder of her two minor daughters. The tragic incident occurred on September 1, 2023, in Baurikandi Part-1, following a dispute with her husband, Babul Haque Laskar. Ajmira confessed to drowning her daughters, aged three years and 10 months, in a pond near their home, claiming she intended to end all their lives but survived. The post-mortem examination revealed that both children died from asphyxia caused by drowning. Babul reported the incident to the police after the children were declared dead at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The prosecution argued that despite her claims of distress, the act was a deliberate homicide. The court, after reviewing witness testimonies and medical evidence, convicted Ajmira under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
