On Sunday, an illegal madrasa in Khalilabad, Sant Kabir Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, was demolished following a court order. The structure, associated with Shamsul Huda Khan, a UK-based cleric originally from eastern Uttar Pradesh, was built on 640 square metres of government land and was estimated to have cost nearly โน5 crore (approximately $600,000 USD). The demolition was executed by 10 teams under tight security, involving over 100 police personnel, including women constables. Khan, who acquired British citizenship in 2013, is facing multiple criminal cases, including allegations of financial irregularities and links to extremist networks. The madrasa had been closed since 2024, when it had around 400 students enrolled. Legal actions began after a complaint was filed in 2024, leading to a court order for demolition issued in November 2025. The operation raised concerns about the alleged misuse of foreign funds for promoting radicalization.
