On Saturday, the Jammu and Kashmir administration ordered the takeover of 58 schools linked to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its Falah-e-Aam Trust. This decision was prompted by adverse intelligence reports and the expiration of the schools' management tenures. The School Education Department invoked notifications from the Ministry of Home Affairs that classify JeI as an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). JeI was initially banned in 2019 for five years, with the ban extended in 2024. Officials stated that these schools were found to be directly or indirectly affiliated with the banned organization. Deputy commissioners have been instructed to take control of the schools and propose new, verified management committees to ensure that students' academic interests are not disrupted. This action follows a similar takeover in 2025, when the J&K government managed 215 schools linked to JeI and Falah-e-Aam Trust across the Union Territory.
