Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for the rapid execution of water conservation projects in response to the impending impacts of El Niño, a climate phenomenon expected to disrupt rainfall patterns in the state. During a review meeting, he emphasized the need for urgent repairs in villages under the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan 2.0, aiming to enhance groundwater levels. Fadnavis instructed officials to prioritize these repairs and approve state-level plans by May 15. The India Meteorological Department predicts that El Niño effects will peak in August and September, leading to below-normal rainfall during the monsoon season. As of now, 1,44,697 works have been sanctioned under the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan 2.0, with 1,10,120 completed. The chief minister also highlighted the importance of utilizing the Centre's 'Viksit Bharat' initiative to bolster water conservation efforts, including the removal of silt from water bodies to restore their capacity. The department aims to complete ongoing projects and ensure that tanker-dependent villages receive assistance promptly.
