The Maharashtra government is set to introduce a training module to teach Marathi to auto and taxi drivers, making the language compulsory for communication with passengers starting May 1. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik emphasized the initiative's importance, especially after Marathi was designated as a classical language. To facilitate this, a special meeting with experts will be convened on April 24 to outline the implementation framework and training plan. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has begun placing stickers on autorickshaws in Mumbai to indicate that the driver knows Marathi, promoting the initiative further. Sarnaik noted that many passengers face challenges when non-local drivers cannot communicate in Marathi, and he warned that licenses for drivers lacking basic Marathi skills may be revoked. This move aims to enhance communication and foster respect for the Marathi language among drivers.
