Dr. Shriram Nene, a US-based cardiovascular surgeon and husband of Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, discussed the strong expectations his immigrant parents had for him during a panel at INKtalks. They insisted he pursue either medicine or engineering, a pressure he felt deeply. Despite being accepted into prestigious universities like Stanford and Berkeley, he chose to attend Washington University for an undergraduate medical program. Nene expressed the profound impact of his work, highlighting the urgent nature of surgery and the teamwork involved in saving lives. He also reflected on the challenges of relocating to India in 2011, noting that his family was initially unhappy with his decision to leave a successful career as a heart surgeon. Nene and Dixit have two sons, Arin, born in 2003, and Ryan, born in 2005, and they moved back to Mumbai together in 2011.
