He revealed that his decision was influenced by two core beliefs: the transformative potential of AI through scaling and the necessity of prioritizing AI safety. Amodei, who was head of research at OpenAI, recognized the significant performance improvements that could be achieved by increasing model size and data input, a perspective he championed during the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3. However, he grew increasingly concerned that OpenAI was not fully committed to addressing safety issues surrounding advanced AI technologies. This led him to leave and establish Anthropic alongside his sister Daniela and other former colleagues, aiming to create AI systems with a stronger focus on safety. Anthropic has since garnered substantial investment from major companies like Amazon and Google, positioning itself as a competitor to ChatGPT in both enterprise and consumer markets.
