During a quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate CEO Adam Fogelson shared his enthusiasm for the project, noting that discussions with involved parties are progressing well. He revealed that a portion of the sequel's footage was originally shot for the first film, which could provide financial advantages. The first film concluded during Jackson's 1987 Bad tour, leaving many aspects of his later life, including his musical eras and the controversies surrounding him, unexplored. Fogelson indicated that the sequel will delve into these untold stories, emphasizing that there are many entertaining elements from Jackson's career that were not covered previously. He also teased that the narrative might not adhere to a strict chronological order, allowing for a more engaging storytelling experience. The original film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, was a box office success, grossing over $700 million globally and becoming the second-highest-grossing biopic of all time.
