India is considering a phased increase in ethanol blending in petrol from 20% to 25% as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and enhance energy security. This move is driven by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have led to uncertainty in global oil markets and rising crude prices. Currently, the 20% ethanol blending has helped India save approximately 4.5 crore barrels of crude oil annually, reducing foreign exchange outflows by around ₹1.5 lakh crore (roughly $180 million USD). However, government officials have indicated that any increase will be approached cautiously due to concerns about fuel efficiency and the compatibility of higher ethanol levels with existing vehicle engines. In addition to increasing ethanol blending, India is also expanding its domestic refining capacity and strategic petroleum reserves to bolster its energy resilience. The focus on renewable energy, biofuels, and hydrogen reflects a shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, aimed at reducing long-term vulnerabilities associated with imported fossil fuels.
