Ayushmann Khurrana has long been associated with films that bring taboo subjects into mainstream Hindi cinema. From sperm donation in his debut film Vicky Donor in 2012 to erectile dysfunction in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan in 2017, the actor built a distinct space for himself with stories that addressed uncomfortable social topics with humour and sensitivity. Many of these films also worked well at the box office, helping Ayushmann become one of Bollywood’s most reliable faces for content-driven cinema. However, the actor now says he is in a different phase of his career and wants to focus on subjects that appeal to wider audiences. Ayushmann Khurrana On Moving Away From Taboo Subjects During his appearance on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, Ayushmann was asked which taboo subject he would like to explore next on screen. The actor laughed and said he feels he has already exhausted that space. He said, “I think maine saare taboo topics khatam kar diye hain. I have worked in so many films based on them. It limits the family audience. I did films on taboo subjects before the Covid pandemic. Even after that, I did Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui and Doctor G, which didn’t get as much at the box office as I hoped for.” Ayushmann’s comment reflects how the theatrical landscape has changed after the pandemic, with many actors and filmmakers reassessing the kind of stories that bring audiences to cinemas. Ayushmann Says OTT Changed Audience Choices The actor further explained that the rise of OTT platforms has influenced the kind of films he now wants to do. According to him, he is more drawn to relatable subjects that families can watch together, rather than stories built primarily around breaking taboos. He added, “After OTT became big, I only looked for films which were for wider audiences. Taboo break se zyaada relatable subjects which people can watch together. Everything was so different before the pandemic, the films I did had tremendous box office uproar. But things changed post pandemic.” Ayushmann said that while his earlier films found strong theatrical support before the pandemic, the audience’s viewing behaviour has shifted significantly in recent years. Ayushmann Khurrana’s Upcoming Films Ayushmann was recently seen in Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, which released on Friday and opened to an average first day at the box office. The actor also has Yeh Prem Mol Liya and Udta Teer in the pipeline. With these films, Ayushmann appears to be leaning towards stories with a broader emotional and family-friendly appeal, moving away from the taboo-breaking cinema that once defined a major part of his filmography.
