A city court in Haryana has directed the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Sukhbir Kataria, a former minister, for allegedly diverting ₹18 lakh (approximately $22,000 USD) in public funds. The allegations state that between 2010 and 2014, Kataria misused his position by falsely listing three individuals as residents of a property he owned in New Colony, thereby enabling them to receive grants meant for economically weaker families. Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajat Verma stated that the serious nature of the allegations warranted an FIR, as the evidence suggested that the grants were disbursed to secure votes. The police had previously confirmed Kataria's ownership of the property through an electricity bill. The court criticized the police for not preparing an independent report regarding the case. This follows a previous FIR ordered against Kataria in May 2025 for similar misconduct involving grants to ineligible individuals, including a family member.
