India's digital transformation is set to enter a new phase by integrating government data with artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The National Statistics Office (NSO) is leading this initiative, aiming to make vast amounts of government data accessible and usable for AI applications. Currently, critical information regarding regulatory requirements and government schemes is often inaccessible to AI tools, leading to approximated answers instead of precise guidance. By launching the Model Context Protocol server on February 6, 2026, the NSO has enabled direct connections between AI systems and datasets on its e-Sankhyiki portal, which holds 135 million records on socio-economic indicators. This infrastructure allows users to query official statistics in real time, transforming how market analysis and research are conducted. The initiative particularly benefits small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing them with essential market intelligence that can enhance competitiveness and operational efficiency. As more datasets become interconnected, the potential for deeper insights and comprehensive decision-making will grow, ultimately contributing to India's economic development and the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India).
