Macy Watson, a 15-year-old girl, struggled with anxiety and irritability following a concussion sustained while surfing in Torquay, Australia. After three months of ineffective treatments, she participated in a trial program at Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI), which resulted in significant improvement. The program, involving 158 participants aged 8-18, reported that 67% of participants fully recovered, compared to only 37% receiving standard care. The trial emphasized the importance of early intervention and education for families about concussion management. Lead researcher Professor Vicki Anderson noted that while 30% of children may have persistent symptoms, most recover within three weeks. The program encourages a gradual return to physical activity, contrasting with previous advice to rest completely. This approach aims to alleviate parental anxiety and promote physical activity among children. MCRI has secured funding for a national rollout of the program, which will include telehealth options to assist families outside major urban centers.
