The National Commission for Women (NCW) has released a report following a fact-finding mission to a TCS-linked Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) center in Nashik, Maharashtra, which revealed a deeply troubling workplace environment characterized by pervasive sexual harassment and abuse of authority. The investigation, initiated on April 15, involved interviews with complainants, internal committee members, and police. Nine staffers accused eight senior colleagues of misconduct, leading to the arrest of the latter by Nashik police. The NCW's report, presented to Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, highlighted that the accused targeted vulnerable female employees, creating a coercive atmosphere that discouraged complaints due to fear of professional repercussions. The report criticized the BPO for failing to comply with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act), citing non-functional CCTVs and a lack of awareness among employees regarding their rights. The NCW recommended strict adherence to the POSH Act and suggested measures to protect complainants, including the use of the Witness Protection Act, 2017. In response, TCS representatives denied the NCW's claims, asserting that employees had received mandatory POSH training and that compliance measures were in place.
