Omdia reported a 1% increase in global smartphone shipments in Q1 2023, totaling 298.5 million units. This growth was primarily driven by vendors front-loading inventory in anticipation of rising component costs. Samsung led the market with 65.4 million shipments, marking an 8% year-over-year increase, bolstered by strong demand for its Galaxy S26 series and new models like the Galaxy A37 and A57, contributing to a 22% market share. Apple followed closely with 60.4 million shipments, a 10% increase, attributed to the popularity of the iPhone 17 series, especially in Europe and Japan. Xiaomi, in third place with 33.8 million shipments, experienced the largest decline of 19%, impacted by rising component costs. Oppo and vivo rounded out the top five with 30.7 million and 21.3 million shipments, respectively. Looking forward, analysts from Omdia anticipate a challenging period for the smartphone market due to high channel inventory and weak consumer demand as we approach the second half of 2023.
