Monia Chokri, a Canadian actress, director, and screenwriter, has been appointed as the president of the Camera d'Or jury for the 79th Cannes Film Festival, scheduled from May 12 to 23, 2023, in Cannes, France. The Camera d'Or award is presented to first works featured in the official selection, Critics' Week, and Directors' Fortnight sections of the festival. Chokri emphasized the significance of debut films, describing them as a transformative experience for filmmakers. She noted that a debut film represents a 'second birth' for artists, allowing them to fully express their creativity. Chokri, known for her roles in 'The Age of Darkness' and 'Heartbeats', made her directorial debut in 2019 with 'A Brother’s Love', which received the Jury Coup de Coeur prize at Cannes. She will be joined on the jury by cinematographer Michel Benjamin, film critic Cedric Coppola, director Marine Francen, and Christophe Massie, deputy CEO of Eclair by Netgem, all selected from various film associations linked to the Camera d'Or jury.
