The Saurath Sabha, located in Surath village, Madhubani district, Bihar, is a 700-year-old cultural institution that has historically served as a marriage gathering for the Mithila community. Once bustling with activity, the Sabha is now witnessing a significant decline in participation, attributed to modern influences such as social media and dating apps, which allow families to find suitable matches without attending the event. The Sabha, held annually in a 22-acre mango orchard known as 'Sabha Gachhi,' was traditionally a place for arranging marriages through careful genealogical consultations by Panjikars, who ensure that prospective couples are not closely related. However, changing societal values have led families to prioritize personal attributes over lineage verification, diminishing the Sabha's role. Moreover, the preservation of genealogical records, many of which are on fragile palm leaves, is at risk without systematic digitization efforts. Experts emphasize the urgent need to safeguard these records to protect Mithila's rich cultural heritage.
