Palestinians participated in local elections on Saturday, the first in Gaza in over 20 years, specifically in Deir al-Balah, a city that has suffered from ongoing conflict. The elections are part of the Palestinian Authority's (PA) efforts to connect Gaza and the West Bank politically. Voter turnout was reported at 53.4% overall, while Deir al-Balah saw a lower turnout of 22.7%. Despite low participation, many voters expressed a desire for local governance to improve public services amidst a backdrop of corruption and autocratic rule by the PA. Hamas, which controls Gaza, did not field candidates, allowing the PA to promote these elections as a step towards reform. The PA has faced challenges, including logistical issues due to Israeli restrictions on election materials. The elections did not take place in Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem, a point of ongoing contention. Results from the elections are expected to be announced soon.
