The Badminton World Federation (BWF) plans to implement a new scoring system in 2024, shifting from the traditional 3x21 format to a 3x15 format, which will reduce match lengths by approximately 30 minutes. This change has sparked considerable debate among coaches, particularly in India, who argue that it may dilute the sport's essence by minimizing the physical and tactical challenges players face. Vimal Kumar, a prominent Indian coach, emphasizes that the new format could undermine the skills, endurance, and mental strength essential to badminton. He believes that instead of altering the scoring system, the BWF should focus on improving event scheduling and player management. Anand Pawar, another former international player, echoes these sentiments, stating that the new format may lead to quicker rallies and increased errors, fundamentally changing the nature of the game.
